NTT RESEARCH LAB

Equipment Facilities in NTT Research Lab
Facilities in NTT Research Lab are mainly used for research in the area of Virtual Reality Telecommunication, Broadband and Multimedia Networking. Some of the major equipments available are as follows:

Virtual Reality Telecommunication System (VRTS)
The equipment setup for the system is basically divided into 2 parts:

  • 3D video communication system: consists of 3D video camera, microphones, 3D VCR, sound mixer, video mixer, matrix switcher, MPEG-2 codec, video line doubler, power amplifier, speakers and 3D monitor.
  • Robotic arm: A prototype robotic that imitates human arm motion for gesture information transmission in communication.

The current plan is to test and evaluate these two systems in terms of psychological and technical aspects, and then the integration of the systems as the terminal prototype for VRTS.

Audiometric chamber
Controlled environment for audiometry measurements. The chamber is able to suppress noise to a certain level and reduce reverberation time.

Digital Audio Tape (DAT) recorder
Records audio signal and transfers all the data digitally on to a Digital Audio Tape (DAT).

ADSL Line Simulator
The simulator is used to test the ADSL working environment in various conditions. ADSL is the broadband transmission method utilizing copper telephone line.

The optical communication system equipments can be used to carry out research in optical communication systems, specifically in Intensity Modulated Direct Detection (IMDD) and Subcarrier Multiplexed systems (SCM). The equipments include:

Equipment Facilities in Intel Microelectronics Lab
Intel Microelectronics Lab is for teaching and research in the area of microelectronics and RF design. The high speed computing facility available is also used for doing simulation studies. Most of the equipment in this lab is donated by Intel Technology Inc.

Equipment Facilities in Intel Advanced Network Architecture Lab
The facilities in this lab enable research and course development on Intel's family of IXP(R) network processors
The lab is equipped with Intel IXP 1200  Network  Processor Evaluation Kit, Intel IXA Software Development Tool and Pentium 4 Personal Computers .

In addition to that the lab is also equipped with Altera FPGA hardware (Flex 10K board) and MAX+PLUS II software development tools for digital system design .Computer aided design software available are Accel Schematic, Accel P-CAD PCB Design and Dr Spice Simulation.

NOKIA WIRELESS COMMUNICATION LAB

Equipment Facilities in NOKIA Wireless Communication Lab
NOKIA Wireless Communication Lab has the facilities to perform a complete evaluation of the GSM Network architecture. This testbed consists of Base Station Subsystem (BSS), Network Subsystem (NSS) and Network Management System (NMS).

The BSS consists of Base Station Controller (BSC), Base Transceiver Station (BTS) and Transcoder Submultiplexer (TCSM). The NSS is formed by Mobile Switching Centre (MSC), Home and Visitor Location Registers (HLR/VLR), Authentication Centre (AC) and Equipment Identity Register (EIR). The NMS is mainly a monitoring and management software system.

The elements in this lab are:

  • BTS (2nd and 3rd generations DF34, Ultrasite, Metrosite and Insite)
  • BSC

MICROFABRICATION LABORATORY (MICROLAB)

The Microfabrication Laboratory (Microlab) is a resource centre for the engineering community of the University. It provides research space in semiconductor and microfabrication technology. The Microlab is a compact, highly flexible laboratory for the microfabrication design, preparation and manufacture of small structures such as novel device & technology; micro-sensors; micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS); display technology etc using current photolithographic techniques.

The Microlab occupies an area of about 400 square feet providing Class 100 environment and basic fabrication modules: - Photolithography and Wet Etching, Thermal Diffusion and Implantation, Dry Etching and Sputtering and Film and Device Characterisation.

WAVE RADIATION LAB

We are in the process of setting up a Multipurpose Anechoic Chamber which will operate over a very wide frequency range from 30 MHz through 18 GHz. It can be used for EMC tests, antenna measurements, radar cross-section measurements,  RF transceiver testing, calibration of scatterometer, microwave Remote Sensing investigation, and other electromagnetic research topics.

It is suitable for both industrial use and basic research. The equipment that are available include Vector Network Analyzer, EMC Analyzer, Portable E-Field Radiation Meter, Microwave Synthesizer, RF Power Amplifier, Bilog Antennas, Dipole Antenna sets, Wideband Horn Antennas, Standard Gain Horn Antennas, etc.

 


CENTRE for PHOTONICS RESEARCH, INNOVATION and APPLICATIONS (CPRIA)

This centre is mainly used by staff and postgraduate researchers.

Fibre Optic Equipment 

The experimental setup to measure the coupling loss between laser diodes and optical fibers

A splicing machine use to splice two fiber together

This is a fully automated alignment system used to align optical devices with the optical fibers and vice versa
The fusion splicer is used to splice two optical fibers together using the electric arc heating method
This beam profiler is used to study the far field radiation pattern of optical light sources
This OSA (Optical Spectrum Analyser) is used to study the optical spectrum, transmission characteristics in an optical network and analyze different type of light sources like the LED, DFB-LD, FP-LD and so on
Tunable light source provider in the L-Band and the C-band
Optical test system comprises of two modules that are the polarization scrambler and the PDL/OL meter. The polarization scrambler is a device that transforms the input state of polarization (SOP) of a beam into a different output SOP. The PDL/OL meter is to measure the polarization dependance loss and the optical loss in an optical network

  • Synthesized Sweeper: Can be used to generate various kinds of waveforms. Currently used for remote sensing research.
  • SAR Processing Software: A software to process Synthetic Aperture Radar imagery. Can be used for interferometry processing. Currently installed at Computer Architecture Lab.

CENTRE for SMART SYSTEMS and INNOVATION (CSSI)

Equipment & Facilities in CSSI

This centre is mainly used for staff and postgraduate researchers.

Facilities available in the centre:

  • Solid-state ionic (Li ion batteries) research facilities: a 1100 deg. C furnace, a 250 deg. C vacuum oven, a laminator for making flexible thin Li-ion batteries, a electronic balance, two units magnetic stirrer/heater, fume chamber, dessicator and dessicator cabinets, glassware, and other facilities for solid-state ionic researches.
  • Thin film deposition facilities: a vacuum evaporator (waiting for setup), a pulse laser depositor (call for quotation).
  • Clean room facilities: This clean room will be set up outside the centre. This is set up mainly for fabricating opto-electronic materials, organic electronics, and electroluminescent devices. The equipment received is a water deionizer (waiting for setup). It is expected that the clean room will be ready at the end of next year (2001).
  • Other equipment: a pyroelectric joule meter (10 micro-J to 10 milli-J), a fibre optic spectrometer (call for quotation).
  • Work station facilities: two HP9000 workstations with two licensed Fortran 77/C/ANSI C compilers, one 4 mm tape drive, one 8 mm tape drive and a HP1600CM Deskjet Printer.
